This fall, Pendleton is launching The Portland Collection, a new line of clothing for a younger, urbane set. The brand says that this line will be a bit more mainstream and certainly less expensive than their wildly successful collaboration with Opening Ceremony (many pieces of which are currently on sale!). Pendleton tapped three young designers from Portland (where else?) to create the Navajo-inspired collection, which should be hitting shelves any day now. For a list of boutiques carrying the line, see here. Happy shopping!

This year’s resort wear/ summer collections have been completely dominated by lounge wear, as well as street fashion and leaked into mainstream labels  But now, the real question is which came first- Steve Madden introducing pony hair slippers mid-summer or the launch and quick unleashing of Celine’s street-ready silk pajama sets? Was is a bottomless Gwyneth, clothed solely in a classic Brooks Brothers’ boyfriend pajama shirt in that Vogue editorial last August? I like to think it’s all the meow meow people are taking, all that planking, that has people a little bit more hesitant to leave their bedclothes behind.

Labels shown clockwise,

Celine Spring/Summer 2011

Karen Walker Spring/ Summer 2011

Dear World,

I’m happy that records haven’t dipped into infinity and have instead become one of those relics that we treasure and love. Now my record collection can’t compare to my father’s whose literally lines the walls of his sunny Chicago apartment with music from his day as a rock reviewer for Playboy, but there are enough good tunes in my apartment to fill a sunny Sunday of cleaning. But now the question is, is it enough to warrant spending $850 on this Audiowood Chipmunk Turntable?

Filed Under: Do Fall Like A Lady

It seems that recently there has been a lot of talk about the ‘Modern Lady’ in style; shaking the boho trend (unless we are talking 20’s Bohemian) that has grown a little tired into a newly refined style sensibility. Fall 2011 fashion seems to be going that way as well, with designers from Alexander McQueen and Jason Wu coming out with prim pieces of lace and tweed—sometimes a little tongue-in-cheek like the McQueen clutch below. This is happening in the mainstream and in men’s fashion too, as J.Crew has just begun selling men’s pocket squares.

Personally, Tom Ford’s cat-eyed Nikita sunglasses have me convinced that this fall is going to be one fierce lady.

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m in love with this ring from the Melbourne Metal Collective. Yes, I want to buy it, propose to myself in a woody setting and marry it. I love it that much.

It used to be that we kept tiny crinkled photos of loved one in gold lockets to remind us while we wandered the world of how we felt about them. Now, as the world has gone increasingly digital these paper photos are more and more succumbing to the status of thrift store relics. Designer Emily Rothschild, has updated the golden locket to hold not a photo but a USB drive capable of holding your dearest digital photos.

Since I’m still mad at The New York Time’s for blowing up my swim spot—bet, you would think that I’d link to the article here, but no way dude, I’m not passing along that information—I’m already searching for a new way to dip my feet and escape the heat. That’s why I love this Kickstarter idea for a pool in the East River that would not only be a source of sun-bathing joy, but would have a built-in filtration system that would actually clean the water as you swam. Such an amazing idea!

PottedPotted

Last Sunday after nibbling on mouthwatering produce and savory papusas at the Atwater farmer’s market (famous for their farm fresh eggs), I ventured over to Potted.  I can always spend a good portion of my day perusing the many succulents and assorted pots they have, but my most favorite part about this fine establishment is the pot-it-yourself succulent room.  The crafty and ever so charming staff will basically leave you to your own devices in a shed-like room filled with different color pebbles, broken glass, and stones.  If you need help or want to let the master’s at it all you have to do is holler.  Here is what I came up with:

Filed Under: Cool Hit for the Summer- Ice Cream Sandwiches

It was recently mentioned in the Trendera New York office that the number of emerging food trends over the past few months (bologne, punch, pie, ramps, savory cocktails, etc) had petered out without a clear roster of replacements for the upcoming months. But just when we were beginning to lose hope, the gourmet ice cream sandwich emerges! This week’s New York Magazine featured an article on the eight most appetizing renditions from all over the five boroughs. Expect to see this favorite treat popping up in trend forward restaurants as the temperatures begin to rise nationwide.

Filed Under: A Tree To Call My Own

As we start to search for authentic ways to connect with our food and land, it makes sense that we would go back to the very roots of produce—a tree. Yes, I would like to own a little fruit tree from which I could nibble on all summer long or can it’s delicious offerings into some jam to savor on a winter’s day. But, since I live in Brooklyn and can only claim a cement I guess I’ll have to make due with simply renting one.  According to The Independent this is becoming a reality for European consumers at least:

Part of the perk of adopting an orange tree from Finca Ca’s Sant orchard in Mallorca means you receive shipments of ripe fruit, marmalade and orange liqueur. Adopt an olive tree on Italy’s Nudo farm and you receive freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil.

Riddle: If your Dad already has an iPad, what do you get him for Father’s Day?

Answer: Ummmmm…..

For some reason or another, fathers are notoriously difficult to shop for. While mothers (pretend to) appreciate handmade trinkets and sentimental kitsch, fathers aren’t as apt to tear up over a handmade frame. Chocolates, flowers, perfume, jewelry…all “for the girls.” Aside from the standard ties/cufflinks/watches/gadgets (see: iPad we got him for Christmas), I am always at a loss when it comes to buying Dad a gift. If he wants something, he gets it himself like a rational human being. And he doesn’t golf.

So what is a loving daughter to do? Why, impress some of my own style on his outdated ass, of course! If he doesn’t want anything, I’ll get him what (I think) he needs. Ulterior motive? Well, I’d love to cruise on that beautiful Bianchi around town, sneak a lotion from the Kiehl’s x Sartorialist dopp kit, and maybe help sample some homemade craft beer from Beer Craft. Other than that, just trying to help Dad look good.
