When Obama graced the tumblr world with his presence everyone got excited. And now that the President is on Instagram we’re pretty sure he’ll be met with the same excitement. He’s only been on the photo sharing site for just over a day and at the moment has over 22K followers. The comments on the photo page are turning into heated political debates. Looks like Obama’s social media push is just getting started.

We all know that using the tech of the “youth” was one of the huge ways that Obama garnered such a firey following with Gen Y the first go around. After 4 years of meh, it might take all hands on the internet deck to galvanize those troops again. But the fact that Obama has a tumblr speaks more to the administration’s seeming commitment to constant communication with its followers. It’s the modern fireside chat- and it’s taking place 24/7.
Filed Under: Reinserting Place: Dear Photograph

We’ve written about Dear Photograph in the past, but it continues to grow in popularity and poignancy. For those who haven’t seen it, Dear Photograph is an incredibly touching blog where users submit photographs of photographs held over the place they were taken, decades before, along with messages written to people in the picture (sometimes the long-gone subject, sometimes a childhood version of their children, or of themselves). One particularly moving example of this blog’s gravitas are the submission for the September 11th ten year anniversary (below).
I am left wishing we could do this digitally, by holding up our smartphones. Reinserting place, and history, into the continuously placeless, globalized world seems to be an emerging preoccupation for Ys.

Tumblr is the mecca for mono-theme blogs, like Awesome People Hanging Out Together and Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber, that aggregate user-submitted photos into hilariously specific collections that we never knew we needed to look at—or would be so funny en mass, such as Uncomfortable Moments with Putin.
Check out our newest favorite, Teenage Bedrooms. Because what the hell were we all thinking; that half-naked boy band posters + MK/Ashley shrine + mardi gras beads = decor?! Oh yeah, it definitely did. Reminisce on that precious teenage angst, translated through flashback photos and current adolescent submissions. Sweet!

Suri’s Burn Book is by far my new favorite blog. Reading real celeb gossip has gotten so boring and repetitive- so there is something so perfectly ridiculous and hilarious about this blog of Suri Cruise bashing all other celebrity children in perfectly pretentious tone that is so wrong to imagine coming from a five year old that it can’t help but be hilarious.
