Yesterday, Muppets: The Green Album was released by Walt Disney records as a CD and digital download. The album features covers of classic Muppet songs like “Rainbow Connection” by contemporary artists like OK Go (amazing video above), Weezer, The Fray and Andrew Bird. As far as build up to the upcoming The Muppets film goes, it doesn’t get much better than this. OK Go has a history of creating virals, and a collab with the Muppets is almost a surefire internet takeover machine.

Add to that the fact that many Gen Ys consider the music they learned in childhood to be serious quality fare (I will argue with anyone that the soundtrack the The Chipmunk Adventure is a work of art) and these covers act as a kind of homage to the Muppet culture. For those of us who grew up listening to the In Harmony LP, it only makes sense that great artists would join hands with the Muppets to create beautiful music together…and our countdown to The Muppets starts now.

Is it just me or is this New Villager video better than  Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” which was officially released today? The former seems like a strange dream directed by artist Nick Cave, while Gaga’s seems like two videos (A cheesy sci-fi video made by artists and a ’90s pop anthem video.) messily merged together to me.  Lord knows I’m more likely to get “Born This Way” stuck in my head especially since it’s played non-stop at my bodega, but I still think I’m more into the New Villager trippy video.

I got back last week after traveling for a month straight. (The upside of living out of your suitcase for a month is that your tiny New York apartment no longer literally feels like one.) The last stop in my travels was to my frozen hometown Chicago. While there I bowled, went dancing at a speakeasy where I smoked indoors just because I could, dyed the bottom of my hair blue, ate seven layer nachos and luxuriated in drinking growlers of Chicago-brew Half Acre. Yeah, I’m a little homesick. So I keep listening to Chicago bands like these guys, My Gold Mask. Even if you are not homesick for hot dogs like me, you should listen to them too.
