Filed Under: When Two Become One

It is always nice to see two design trends become one; namely the cartographer print trend and the floral print trend here in the duvet by DENY artist Bianca Green. Nothing says Spring like a world-over, technicolor flower-kingdom explosion!

Recently launched urban betterment project DUB 00 installs mini libraries in antiquated (and not often used) phone booth space. The libraries are meant to be open shares, with the books free to take, and other books welcome as additions.
It would be interesting to see what brands could do with the unused space in cities…

Filed Under: Orla Kiely X Uniqlo
Yesterday, the Orla Kiely collab at Uniqlo officially launched, and it looks great— and like a great way to own a bit of Orla Kiely design that doesn’t break the bank. The collection is simple and subtle- Kiely classic prints on Uniqlo basics. If the brand continues with designer collabs, they could be unique in making famous prints available to fans for less, which could be preferable to the increasingly hyped up designer collections for fast fashion that many shoppers end up disappointed in.

It seems that one indiscriminate apartment building in San Francisco has produced a growth on its side! Brooklyn artist Mark Reigelman (with the help of architect Jenny Chapman and engineer Paul Endres) designed a tiny cabin (uninhabited at the moment) that sits on the side of building in the purpose of “seeks out areas of unclaimed territory for establishing a new home front in the remaining voids of San Francisco, California”, titled Manifest Destiny!

The first time that this Pugs in Space necklace was on Modcloth.com, it sold out so fast heads spun. Are animals in space the new iteration of the space design trend?
Filed Under: The Great Tiki Revival

If last summer was The Great Surf Revival, this summer is primed to be the summer of The Great Tiki revival. Already thoroughly established in cocktail and bar culture, with infamous New York tiki bars such as Painkiller (PKNY) on Essex Street opening up in the last few years and influencers picking up old Bas Sheva tiki beats. The Spring Ready-To-Wear runways of Stella McCartney (above, center), Marc Jacobs (above, left) and Tory Burch (above, mid right) showed that fashion is now adopting the tiki trend. With hints of Havana (tropical floral prints), Hawaii (surf prints and raffia), and overall tropical euphoria, we expect to see more than one Hawaiian-shirted influencer in the coming months.

Louis Vuitton’s iconic logo print bags have cycled through some edgy collaborations (see: Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami), restyling the aesthetics of legendary Louis bags. But to mark their 100th anniversary, the luxury goods leader collaborates with British artist Billie Achilleos for Maroquinaris Zoologicae--even at 100, it’s great to see that the brand is playful.
Achilleos reimagines classic Louis Vuitton bags, wallets, and accoutrements as fashionable fauna, all with a function of reflecting design elements of Louis Vuitton in their inherent forms—Achilleos says, “The armadillo was to highlight the soft yet durable quality of the leather. The chameleon displays the variety of color.” Form, function, and fashion? If only these could escape from the zoo and into production.

Hotel Lautner, Desert Hot Springs, California. Designed by John Lautner in 1947, and updated by Tracy Beckmann and Ryan Trowbridge.
BRB, booking right now.
Hotel Lautner is a hybrid of some of our favorite trends. Recently renovated, the hotel is an assemblage of affordable luxury, American South Western swankiness, and midcentury modern minimalism. The chic stay is a full immersion into the period and is decorated with bevy of original Mid-Century furniture designed by the likes of Warren Platner, Harry Bertoia, and Sigurd Resell. If you’re an avid or rabid Mad Men fan you can imagine Don Draper residing here during his California sojourn. Deluxe Coachella campsite anyone?
