Filed Under: Inside Outside Lands’ Redesign

This year, Outside Lands is standing out for more than just its awesome lineup. Now in its fifth year, this San Francisco music festival just keeps getting exponentially better, from bigger headliners and more emerging artists to even more local food and wine choices from the city by the bay.

The standout upgrade for 2012 is Outside Lands’ new brand identity, created by Andrew Holder. Graphic illustrations of nature, music, and SF architecture come together in a triangular pattern to create a bold yet playful final result. Perfect for this easy-going, yet hard-rocking, music festival itself.

Yes, we’re all (very) excited about Wes Anderson’s latest film Moonrise Kingdom coming out on May 25; a welcome cerebral respite from the slew of big blockbusters blowing up (and tanking) at the box office. In addition to the inherent awesomeness that surrounds every Anderson project, some impressive, albeit unofficial, fan posters have cropped up. Apparently the world’s graphic design talent will be augmenting box office sales.

Despite the multitude of sophisticated drawing apps for the iPad, we’re still attempting to create digital masterpieces with the dexterity of a kindergartner finger-painting. No more scribble scrabble for me, though—I’ll be snapping up a Sensu Brush, a brilliant tool that combines a rubber-tipped digital stylus with a paintbrush in a sleek silver package. Painting perfection sans mess.

Ice cream, pancakes, and bagels may not sound very gangster in their literal form, but the latest stop-motion short from production duo BankShot makes the food do the talkin’ to classic lines from Biggie Smalls, Raekwon, Q-Tip, Method Man, and more notable rappers. Sponsored by LRG, this video serves up some platinum marketing.

On-trend but not temporarily trendy, the art-inspired Artelier is sure to rejuvenate the Nicole Miller name, and hopefully my closet.

Filed Under: Facebook ID Card Concept

A new Berlin-based project called the FB Bureau is publicly issuing Facebook identity cards that, in principle, would work like a government-issued ID. The ID cards are made of your Facebook profile picture, name, and a QR code that could be scanned by authorities or retailers. The FB Bureau site looks like Facebook requested a shutdown—but an interesting project nonetheless from artist Tobias Leingruber.

Despite the ambivalence that many Facebook users have about the multitude of personal information Facebook has obtained and uses for advertising purposes, Facebook Connect has become a dominant means for signing up for new sites and services. Would a card containing info to our online identity be more useful than a passive government-issued ID? Perhaps, and with trust in the government waning, our ever-changing and self-controlled online identities just may be more identifying.

Louis Vuitton’s iconic logo print bags have cycled through some edgy collaborations (see: Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami), restyling the aesthetics of legendary Louis bags. But to mark their 100th anniversary, the luxury goods leader collaborates with British artist Billie Achilleos for Maroquinaris Zoologicae--even at 100, it’s great to see that the brand is playful.

Achilleos reimagines classic Louis Vuitton bags, wallets, and accoutrements as fashionable fauna, all with a function of reflecting design elements of Louis Vuitton in their inherent forms—Achilleos says, “The armadillo was to highlight the soft yet durable quality of the leather. The chameleon displays the variety of color.” Form, function, and fashion? If only these could escape from the zoo and into production.

10,000 square meters. 5, 000 dresses.  180 fashion shows.  Themed galleries.  A master class with a fashion virtuoso.  Sartorlists, feast your eyes on The Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum.  The project, developed by the Valentino designer and his longtime partner Giancarlo Giammetti, is finally here after two years in the making.  This is one surefire way to get Gen Ys more involved in museum life.  We’re on the lookout for growing ‘mouse’ museums.
