We have gotten some slack for retweeting that an article said we were one of the first trend forecasting companies to spot the Seapunk trend— but we didn’t say we called it, they did! Over the weekend, The New York Times’  Style Section published an article on Seapunk which was pretty alright. But, even more interesting than that is the timeline if the trend reporting that Vice published on their Tumblr today—and that we are republishing now. How long does it take for The New York Times to publish a trend after it takes hold? The answer: Eight WHOLE months.

Filed Under: The Year of the Flexitarian

Watch out, omnivores, pescetarians, paleos and vegans – a new rank has edged itself into the food consumption vernacular.  We wrote about it in one of our 2011 reports, and now The Values Institute at DGWB predicts the rise of the flexitarian as a major 2012 trend in consumer health.  Flexitarians cut back on meat in the diet significantly without going full-on vegetarian (check out the popular Meatless Mondays). It’s nice to know that we can delay our virtuous goal of going vegan for one more year.  So may the best eater win! We know who’s going to be flexing their muscle, or lack thereof, in the ring.

We all do things we probably shouldn’t have after knocking back a few drinks, but what about finally getting the guts to talk to that guy buy that Alexander Wang bag? Alcohol as a spending stimulator as opposed to a social lubricant? Order a drink and help out the economy! Recent articles in the New York Times and GQ discuss shopping irresponsibly—and how it’s a growing trend.

Peanut butter and chocolate ice cream sandwich…drooling.

What is it about ice cream that just screams childhood summers? Even after our favorite frozen treat has enjoyed recent gourmand fame, ice cream still maintains that friendly nostalgia. I’m pretty happy with scooping right from the pint to my mouth, but yesterday’s New York Times featured “Ice Cream Favorites Grow Up,” with ideas for inspired takes on ice cream—and some original recipes that take the now ubiquitous ice cream “creation” to another level of culinary creativity. An ice cream sandwich in a baguette? That qualifies as lunch, right?

Bite-size malted milk ice cream bonbons elevate ice cream from childhood treat to chic

Filed Under: Straight from the Headlines

I’m sitting and eating hotel breakfast in Minneapolis’ hotel lobby. Since yesterday was Easter, I spent my day feasting on cake and not reading the papers. Despite being up since the ungodly hour of 4 am, I’m devouring the newspaper and here are a few of the headlines I’m finding the most filling.

  • Upwardly mobile Chinese men and women are getting more plastic surgery; unfortunately the medical practices are often not brought up to code. (NYT)
  • Some retail businesses are trying to create easier ways for women to actually know their size, including one company that is using a full-body scanner to get the specifics and offer recommendations to struggling shoppers. (NYT)
  • U.S. Olympian Johnny Weir is stepping out of the rink to create a line of “little black dresses.” The dresses are skated to be released next weekend at the “Ice Dreams” skating show in Bensenville, Ill. (WWD)
  • Someone found a way to make weed that doesn’t make you “dopey.” Though many would be saddened by this news, it could be great for people suffering from illness who want to use pot to induce appetite, but don’t want to feel like they are morphing into Cheech. (Science News)
  • In honor of Easter weekend, check out these scientists exploding Cadbury Creme Egg. (YouTube)

There has been a serious increase in time capsule-esque stories of late, and we are loving it. Whether it be a french apartment shut up for 70 years only to be opened like a treasure box or an amazing Parks and Rec episode, people seem to be more and more interested in frozen moments from the past. Maybe the speed at which we all move is making us yearn for contained moments and unchanging pockets of time?

The latest addition to the capsule story collection is the tale of this wallet, lost by its owner 40 years ago in The New York Times offices and found and returned to him- photos, credit cards and all when it was found in 2011.

I’m sitting here in my coffice, trying to sip down some latte art when I get intrigued by a halfalouge a girl in glasses in having over by the cream and sugar stand. I don’t know her, but I can already tell her that “silly bandz” is not a brand new trend. Feel like I might need to go refudiate some of her claims.

(This is how I would talk if I actually used any of The New York Time’s words of the year. If you have no idea what I’m saying you should check out this article to break it down for you. Cheers!)
