The upcoming film Chronicle recently launched a campaign leading up to its theatrical release (this Friday) that may have had some New Yorkers doing a double take at the sky.  The campaign used human-shaped gliders, which looked shockingly like actual flying people and inconspicuously flew them above Manhattan. Surprisingly few noticed the gliders flying overhead— as you’ll see in the video clip above, but where it failed with live crowds, the campaign has gained attention with the video above going viral.

The idea behind the campaign was to create a scene similar to the movie, in which the protagonists, a group of three high school buddies, gain superpowers— including the ability to fly. Three engineers guided the gliders from below with remote controls, making them sail across New York monuments like the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of downtown Manhattan.

Though minimalistic, this is exactly the kind of campaign to get Ys’ attention, perhaps not on the street, but in the blogosphere.
